SB 1298 Approved; Google Self-Driving Cars Legal

Self driving cars are now legal after Governor Brown signed SB 1298 on Tuesday.

The new law follows similar legislation that has already been passed in Florida and Nevada.  SB 1298 will require automakers to have their driverless cars approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles.  It will also require motorists to get a special permit and also sit behind the wheel in case the computer crashes and a human driver needs to step in.

Automakers were actually against the bill because it is still unclear who would be held liable for a crash if somebody alters the car after it is sold.

Self-driving cars are expected to hit the streets by 2015.
