President Obama will be returning to LA on Wednesday, June 6 and Thursday, June 7 for three fundraisers… hey it takes a lot of money to run for President!
Update 9:01am
President Obama just arrived in View Park… MASSIVE jam ups on La Cienega, La Brea, Slauson, Stocker, Centinela.
He’ll be departing around 10:30am for LAX and then leaving LAX at 11:20am.
Update 8:58am
Westwood is now open.
Update 8:51am
Motorcade just passed by Wilshire and Westwood. Also hearing Santa Monica Blvd is catastrophic!
Update 8:44am
Heavy traffic around View Park on Stocker, Slauson, Crenshaw, La Brea and Valley Ridge. Hearing several of those streets are closed.
La Cienega Blvd traffc is jammed northbound from Stocker to Jefferson.
Update 8:42am
@CarterRubin reports Westwood Blvd is CLOSED north of Santa Monica Blvd because of Obama. Big Blue Buses 8 & 12 are turning around at Santa Monica Blvd
Update 8:33am
Our best estimate at this point – Obama will go west down Wilshire to 405, 405 SOUTH to 90 EAST to Slauson, then up La Brea
We’ve also got Westwood Blvd shut down
Update 8:30am
Full closure at Wilshire and 405 … also Slauson closed near La Brea. Obama is on the move.
Update 8:19am
@KTLAGingerChan reports Wilshire off-ramps from 405 are closed… Possibility he might be headed to 405? Could go 405 to 90/Slauson and across to La Brea.
Update 8:06am
Hearing Wilshire Blvd is closed in Beverly Hills from @NoelleSeybert … Obama may be on the move.
We keep hearing about lots of cops up and down La Brea – so we think he may be going that way!
Slauson also jammed between 90 to Crenshaw
Update 7:45am
@DJ ReMark reports Slauson Blvd east of the 90 is closed, and @mikeyyySB says that there are a lot of “feds” on Slauson and La Brea.
Update 7:40am (6-7-2012)
Obama will be departing Beverly Hills to View Park soon to attend a breakfast fundraiser in View Park at the home of Charles Quarles at 3905 Kenway Ave.
Potential streets to be affected include:
- La Cienega
- Stocker
- La Brea
- Slauson
- Crenshaw
- Valley Ridge
- Angeles Blvd
Expect rolling closures as the president heads there.
He will make remarks around 10:20am, and is scheduled to leave LAX at 11:20am. They may just drive straight to the airport seeing as he is in that general direction for the fundraiser.
Summary: Stay out of Century City and Beverly Hills between 4pm and 10pm on June 6.
- 4:20pm – President lands at LAX – likely helicoptered to Rancho Park / Cheviot Hills and then motorcade from there
- 7:15pm – President speaks at fundraiser at Beverly Wilshire Hotel (Wilshire Blvd at Rodeo near Beverly Dr)
- 8:55pm – President speaks at fundraiser at Beverly Hills home of Ryan Murphy (820 N Roxbury – near Sunset and Benedict Cyn / Rodeo Dr) Thanks to reader Lisa Jay for the Murphy tip-off
Update 7:22pm
Traffic across the westside seems to have eased up.
Most of the severe congestion is limited to the streets around the Beverly Wilshire hotel, including Wilshire, Beverly and Rodeo.
Expect more rolling closures around 7:45-8:30pm as Obama travels from the Beverly Wilshire (probably up Rodeo) to Roxbury near Sunset.
Update 5:28pm
All east-west streets are pretty jammed (Wilshire, Santa Monica, Olympic and Pico between Doheney and Beverly Glen).
All of those streets headed eastbound are solid out of Santa Monica except for Sunset. Sunset EB is ok until Beverly Dr, then gridlocked in to West Hollywood.
Update 5:10pm
Obama motorcade just came north of Ave of the Stars from Pico to Santa Monica. Pico open again!
Update 4:50pm
@eanziska reports that Ave of the Stars is closed from Pico to Santa Monica and full of CHP motorcycles!
Update 4:47pm
As predicted, Marine 1 and other helicopters are headed towards Rancho Park.
Update 4:42pm
President Obama boarding Marine 1 for the trip to (we think) Rancho Park / Cheviot Hills.
All eastbound streets from Santa Monica to Beverly Hills are jammed.
Update 4:33pm
Air Force 1 touching down at LAX.
Update 4:25pm
President Obama is about to land at LAX.
A reader is reporting that there were lots of motorcycle cops staged along Ave of the Stars as well as the northwest corner of Century Park W and Olympic Blvd.
This, combined with a tip about a helicopter run by Rancho Park and Cheviot Hills on Sunday we are pretty certain he will take a helicopter from LAX to Ranch Park, then the motorcade will go between Rancho Park (Pico and Motor) and the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
LAPD has issued the following advisories:
- Avoid westside of Los Angeles, including Wilshire Blvd and and 405 freeway between 3p and 5p
- Avoid West LA and Beverly Hills between 5:30p and 7:30p, then again from 8:30p-10p.
Several websites and TV stations are reporting that the president has travelled from LAX to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Westwood and then is driven to his destinations. Update: Reader Marjorie Hendricks reports that no signs have been posted on San Vicente or Barrington and no military helicopters were doing trial runs as they have in the past. All is quiet in Brentwood. It seems unlikely he’ll be coming to the VA.
While this is technically true, the past two times Obama has been in town the routine was switched up a bit. Instead of the VA, the president has been taken by helicopter from LAX to Rancho Park / Cheviot Hills and then driven to Beverly Hills. This procedure of keeping east of the 405 has been extremely succesful in limiting delays to Century City and Beverly Hills. There is no reason to believe they won’t do this again, but you never know. Update: A reader reports that three Chinooks and two Blackhawks (helicopters) did a practice run at Rancho Park on Sunday between 5:15-5:30pm. It looks likely that Obama will be flown from LAX to Rancho Park and driven from there.
While the presidential motorcade is moving, you can expect rolling street closures major streets. Some possibilities include:
- Pico Blvd
- Olympic Blvd
- Century Park E, Century Park W
- Wilshire Blvd
- Beverly Dr
- Sunset Blvd
- Rodeo Dr
- Benedict Cyn
A rolling closure is when the street is blocked off, the motorcade passes and then the barricades are immedietly removed.
Here is a map of traffic delays and possible street closures for Obama’s visit on June 6, 2012:

Map courtesy Google. Note: We've expanded the "heat map" to include the area around Ryan Murphy's home.
The president will spend the night. He usually stays at the Beverly Hilton Hotel at Santa Monica Blvd and Wilshire Blvd.
On June 7, Obama will attend a breakfast a fundraiser in View Park which is in the south area of Los Angeles near Baldwin Hills at the home of Charles Quarles. Public records indicate Quarles lives on Kenway Ave which is south of Stocker (ed note: We had written Stalker.. that was unintentional.) and east of Valley Ridge. Here is the area where you might experience street closures in View Park on June 7:
Check back as we update with more information as it comes in.

4:13 pm – I don’t see any barracades at Wilshire and Santa Monica, so they must be going further east before going north to the Bveverly Wilshire.
Um…what’s up you guys? It seems like this time no one seems to care about Obamajam. Where are the promised updates? It’s after 4:20 and we have NO word about his status? Really???
I expect you guys to have the low down and you’re letting me down!
On another note, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m bloody sick and tired of the lack of consideration this city is showing it’s residents with all the 405 construction street blockages. Somebody at the county is lining their pockets…that much is for certain!
Sorry! Info was late coming but it’s updating now!
No worries! I was just surprised that nothing had been posted since this morning and I was thinking about how tired I am of the 405 stuff that I decided to post a comment covering both.
You guys are my traffic SUPERhero!
I greatly appreciate this site. Thanks.
As to Patti’s 405 comment: Having lived in Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Chicago, and having traveled through cities in 40 states and also cities in Canada, I can tell you the LA has the finest roads anywhere in this country. Ask not what LA can do for you, ask what you can do for LA. Do you ride a bike to work? walk, carpool, public transportation? If you were, you probably would not be complaining about the 405. And, if more people were, there would be no problem.
Once again the president brings the rush hour commuter traffic of West Los Angeles to its knees all in the name of . . . official presidential business? No, for fundraising. He uses presidential as well as city (read: taxpayer-funded) resources and the most disruptive timetables possible to accomplish his self-serving agenda. And he does it to us again and again. The degree of arrogance and elitism conveyed by his actions is unprecedented. Is no one else incensed by this? A president of the people? I hardly think so.
