Update 11:51am
President Obama is now on Air Force 1. Thus concludes our coverage of ObamaJam V! Thanks for joining us!
Update 11:45am
He’s a little late, but he’s just landing at LAX on Marine 1. He’ll be boarding Air Force 1 in a few minutes and heading to San Francisco.
Update 11:22am
Looks like Obama’s got a straight shot down the 134 and 101. However, 405 SOUTH is still heavy through the Sepulveda Pass.
Update 10:58am
Ok… get ready – Obama will be on the move again. Burbank PD about to shut down streets again per our Bob Gad.
He (Obama, not Bob) is scheduled to leave for San Francisco at 11:45am from LAX.
While we wait – here’s a shot of the motorcade arriving earlier from Irma Blanco at MyFM!
Update 10:30am
101, 134 and 170 freeways are reopened – for now – but still are very slow.
101 SOUTH is heavy from Winnetka to the 134 and the 170 SOUTH is heavy from Victory to the 134.
Westside traffic is starting to improve, but still quite a bit of traffic on Santa Monica and Wilshire around the 405 freeway.
Update 10:00am
Fox 11 is reporting the motorcade has arrived at NBC studios in Burbank… he got stuck in traffic – half of his motorcade arrived before he did.
Update 9:58am
Andrew from MyFM tells us that all on and off ramps heading to the 170, 101, and 134 connector area are closed off..
101 SOUTH traffic is stop and go from De Soto to the 134.
170 SOUTH traffic is slow and go from Roscoe to the 101.
The President is definitely on the move now.
Update 9:28am
@blondielv says that it took 40 minutes to drive on the 405 SOUTH from 5 freeway to Burbank Blvd.
@Jodante says she just spotted a motorcade on the 405 NORTH through the Sepulveda Pass.
Update 9:11am
BTW – Pico, Olympic and Santa Monica all looking really heavy westbound from La Cienega to the westside. Wilshire, Sunset looking slightly better.
Barrington, Sawtelle, Sepulveda, Overland and Westwood all heavy north and southbound between the 10 and Wilshire
Update 9:02am
It is “eerily quiet” on Olympic and Roxbury – @U2TammyWongUs reports streets are now blocked off.
It sounds like Obama will be driven across the westside and then helicoptered to Burbank for the Tonight Show – not confirmed though.
Burbank traffic remains unaffected so far.
Update 8:43am
We’re keeping an eye on the canyon roads – they’re just heavy heading southbound our of the Valley. No major delays heading northbound from Metro LA to the Valley. Also, no major delays seen in Burbank – yet anyways.
Update 8:29am
Our good friend Ginger Chan is reporting some closures are going in to effect on Barrington and Century Park East and West. Looks like the President is about to go on the move…
BTW – Santa Monica Blvd westbound from Doheney to Wilshire is the worst drive right now. It’s heavy again crossing over the 405. Olympic westbound is also heavy La Cienega to Beverly Glen.
Update 8:18am
President Obama is scheduled to appear on a Tonight Show taping sometime this morning at the NBC Studios.
He is said to arrive sometime between 8:00- 9:00am.
KTLA reports the actual interview should be sometime between 10:00 and 10:30am.
If you can, try to keep clear of the Burbank area.
Also, LA Dot says that DASH Hollywood may temporarily be rerouted or delayed due to President Obama traveling through the area.
Expect Delays!
Regular service will resume when it’s permitted.
Update 2:17am (10-25-2011)
Information is starting to trickle in about President Obama’s visit to Burbank and the Tonight Show.
The city of Burbank is saying that Bob Hope Dr will be closed from 4am to 5pm due to the President’s visit. However, all Burbank Bus stops will be serviced but there will be delays.
We do know that the Tonight Show taping will take place in the morning around 8-9am and that the President will leave for San Francisco around noon – the Bob Hope closure until 5pm seems excessive.
So in reality – if you have business in Burbank or vicinity – push it back until the afternoon. There are liable to be more street closures and traffic disruptions during the morning hours

Update 9:37pm
A reader just reported a number of northbound streets off Olympic are closed – motorcade must be headed out.
Update 8:04pm
Traffic has cleared up quite a bit around the Hancock Park area. The president will probably be heading back to the Beverly Hilton sometime after 9pm – barring any more surprise visits to Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. A staff member drove by about 20 minutes ago and saw a number of ominous looking black SUVs parked all around the hotel.
Update 6:38pm
La Cienega both directions is now really heavy between the 10 and Beverly Blvd.
Fairfax, Crescent Heights, La Brea, Rimpau all very heavy still between the 10 and Hancock Park
Wilshire, 6th, Olympic, 3rd and Beverly are all still jammed between Robertson and Highland.
Update 5:54pm
Obamajam V in full effect in Hancock Park.. check out this map of Obama traffic
Update 5:44pm
A number of Metro bus detours are in effect until Obama leaves Hancock Park tonight:
- 212, 312 detour via La Cienega between Rodeo and 3rd
- 20, 720 and 28, 728 detour via Beverly between Western and Crenshaw
- 33, 733, and 735 were being detoured, but back on route now with residual delays
Update 5:34pm
La Brea closed at Venice…
Update 5:30pm
Reader Sabra Williams also says 8th St is a “parking lot” near Hancock Park.
Same goes for 6th.
Update 5:19pm
Faithful reader @blondielv reports motorcade was EB Olympic from Bundy. Smart move – maybe they were reading our traffic updates!
Update 5:15pm
Major gridlock on the north-south streets between the 10 and Hancock Park. Fairfax, Hauser, Redondo / La Brea and Rimpau are pretty bad. Also San Vicente, Venice, Olympic and Wilshire are bad in the vicinity of Hancock Park.
Update 5:05pm
The worst traffic seems to be concentrated to the north of Santa Monica Blvd. Wilshire is a mess eastbound from Santa Monica all the way to Hancock Park. Sunset and Santa Monica crossing the 405 are gridlocked. Barrington and Veteran are also pretty heavy.
If you can get south of Santa Monica Blvd you are in much better shape.
Update 4:58pm
Reports of Wilshire closed at La Brea.
Update 4:44pm
Santa Monica, Sunset and Wilshire headed eastbound very jammed crossing the 405.
Wilshire eastbound is also very heavy the whole way through Beverly Hills in to Hancock Park. 6th St is closed in Hancock Park as well with heavy traffic.
Olympic and Pico are much better east-west streets to travel on right now. Don’t bother with the 10 EAST, traffic is stop and go from Lincoln in Santa Monica to the 5 in Downtown.
Update 4:34pm (10-24-2011)
Obama is boarding the helicopter to head on over to the VA. His motorcade will then travel to Hancock Park.
If you haven’t left yet, sit tight and wait for him to get to Hancock Park. Then you can head home while he’s busy dining with his donors.
Remember, Santa Monica, Sunset, Pico, Olympic, and Wilshire are all subject to rolling closures.
Update 4:30pm (10-24-2011)
Obama is on the ground at LAX – Let Obamajam V commence!
6th St is reported closed near Hancock Park.
Update 4:10pm (10-24-2011)
Santa Monica Bl and Sunset Blvd seem to be the worst – both very heavy eastbound crossing over the 405. Try to get south to Olympic or Pico.
405 NORTH traffic is stop and go from the 10 to Getty and 10 EAST traffic is stop and go from 20th to the 110.
Update 3:35pm (10-24-2011)
It’s about an hour away from “wheels down” – when Obama arrives at LAX.
Some people appear to be making an exodous out of the Westside. 405 NORTH is heavy from the 10 to about Getty Center. 10 EAST is heavy from 20th St in Santa Monica in to Downtown.
Santa Monica, Olympic, Wilshire and Sunset headed eastbound are heavy crossing the 405 freeway.
Update 2:21pm (10-24-2011)
Traffic around the westside still is very light and the 405 NORTH heading up in to the Sepulveda Pass is moving well. Obama is due in around 4:45pm, so if you can split now – you’re good to go.
Update 12:15pm (10-24-2011)
Westside traffic is actually pretty quiet right now. 405 NORTH and 101 NORTH heading to the Valley are both moving well and there are no major surface street jam ups. Get out now if you can!
Update 9:41am (10-24-2011)
Here’s the latest street closures and traffic information related to President Obama’s visit later today and tomorrow (Mon, Oct 24 and Tue, Oct 25)
Our overall advice - if you can take a half day, try to split before lunch. Last time he came in to town, it seems like a lot of people did that. There was a mad rush out of the westside around 1-2pm with heavy traffic on the 405 NORTH and 101 NORTH as well as surface streets.
- President arrives at 4:45pm at LAX
- Usually he is helicoptered to the VA from where the motorcade departs
- He will motorcade across the Westside to sometime between 5pm and 6pm to two seperate events in Hancock Park – Santa Monica, Sunset, Olympic, Pico, Wilshire are all subject to rolling closures
- He usually stays at the Beverly Hilton. So sometime around 9-10pm he’ll probably head back from Hancock Park
Metro has not provided bus advisories yet – but they will release as the afternoon continues.
Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus is alerting riders to delays on routes 1, 2, 3, 8, and 12.
We’re still figuring out the Burbank portion of the trip – but we have received word the actual Tonight Show taping will be at 9am at NBC Studios near Olive and Alameda. That means Obama will be on the move sometime between 8am and 9am from possibly the Beverly Hilton to Burbank.
Obama is scheduled to leave for San Francisco at noon from LAX.
Update 5:37pm (10-23-2011)
More information continues to trickle out about President Obama’s visit to Los Angeles on Monday, October 24.
He is due to arrive at LAX around 4:30 or 5pm. That should give you time to escape if you split from work early on Monday.
The taping for the tonight show is going to be Tuesday morning in Burbank at NBC. President Obama will leave for San Francisco at noon.
Update 12:57pm (10-23-2011)
Per the White House:
In the evening, the President will participate in campaign events in Los Angeles and spend the night there.
On Tuesday morning, the President will tape an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno before departing for San Francisco.
So it sounds like the Tonight Show (or at least President Obama’s segment) will be taped much earlier than normal and traffic in the Burbank area around NBC studios near Olive and Alameda will be affected in the morning.
Here is a map of the most likely affected streets / areas while President Obama motorcades through the Westside on Monday afternoon:
—–
President Obama will be returning to LA on October 24 – this time to court Latino supporters – and their money. He’ll also be making an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno – so now even the Valley people will even get a dose of Obamajam traffic.
We’re still piecing together the sparse details but here’s what we have so far:
Obama will attend a dinner in Hancock Park at the home of “Hitch” producer James Lassiter in the “late afternoon” according to the Hollywood Reporter. That means he will most likely arrive mid-afternoon sometime between 2 and 3pm.
After that he will attend another fundraising gala at the “nearby” home of Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas.
This means he will probably arrive sometime between 2pm and 3:30pm at LAX, from which he will be helicoptered to the VA. From there the motorcade will cross the westside prompting rolling closures of streets, likely Santa Monica, Sunset, Wilshire, Pico and Olympic.
When in town, he usually stays at the Beverly Hilton, so his motorcade will prompt more rolling street closures sometime between 8 and 10.
He is also scheduled to make an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. That will also require street closures in the Burbank Media District and NBC Studios area, especially along streets like Alameda and Olive. The Tonight Show tapes in the early afternoon – so traffic impacts will occur sometime between 3pm and 6pm.
As we get closer to Obama’s actual visit, more information will be released and we’ll continue to update this post.

Thank you Irma you the best to make this report..you work its so great.and yuo help us the people are driving
also when you guys need a good graffity art show I got my famous friend.just visit.www.riskrock.com
I’ll be endlessly delighted if we fire this guy next November JUST so he can stop wrecking the already-disastrous traffic in this town. He’s going to lose his entire L.A. voter base if he keeps coming in at rush hour like this, seriously. What idiots keep scheduling these stupid fundraisers??
101e at the 405 stopped completely by cops
I wouldn’t imagine that a president who claims the right to execute citizens without due process would feel any qualms about massively screwing up traffic in the nation’s second largest city.
