Solo drivers will be able to use the carpool lanes on two freeways under a new ExpressLanes pilot program that broke ground today.
The $120 million dollar project will convert existing carpool lanes to High Occupancy Toll lanes on the 110 and 10 freeways. That means carpools will continue to ride free while cars with just one person will have to shell out some money to use them. Also, the project will add new lanes in both directions and make improvements to the Harbor Transitway at Adams Blvd.
In order to use these lanes both carpoolers and solo drivers will need Fastrak transponders. Tolls will range between 25 cents and one 40 a mile, depending on demand.
The segment on the 110 should open in 2012. The segment on the 10 between Alameda and the 605 should open in 2013.
