Update 10:17am

San Diego Gas and Electric has determined it is safe enough to open one lane of Ortega Hwy while they repair the utility pole damaged in the accident west of the County line.

They will start repair work in a couple of hours, and it probably won’t be fixed until later this afternoon.

In the meantime, traffic will be alternated through the area.  It’s probably better to avoid Ortega Highway altogether and use the 241, 91 and 15 to get around it.

Both directions of the 74 (Ortega Hwy) are closed west of the Orange County/Riverside County line after a car hit a power pole.  Traffic on the 74 EAST will be blocked at Antonio Parkway and 74 WEST traffic is blocked at the county line.

A caller to CHP dispatch reported a silver Prius was driving slowly when the driver of a blue Honda tried to pass but didn’t see oncoming vehicles.  According to witnesses, the Honda hit the side of a hill and went in to a ditch.

Forest officials then told CHP dispatch that Honda had also crashed in to a telephone pole and it was about to fall.

San Diego Gas and Electric is headed out to check on the stability of the pole.
